    The cotton story

How a cotton boll becomes your yarn

Most yarn on our list starts as cotton in a field. Here is the short journey from plant to cone.

    1. Step 1

      Sow and grow

Cotton is sown in spring and grows through the summer. Each plant sets flower buds that turn into bolls.

    2. Step 2

      The boll opens

When the boll is ripe it splits open and shows soft white fibre packed around the seeds.

    3. Step 3

      Picking and ginning

Cotton is picked, then ginned. Ginning separates the fibre from the seed and presses it into bales.

    4. Step 4

      Spinning

The mill opens, cleans and cards the fibre, then draws it out and twists it into yarn. Combed yarn gets an extra combing step.

    5. Step 5

      On the cone

The yarn is wound onto cones and sent to weavers and knitters. This is the yarn in our list.

    Yarn guide

How to read a yarn count

A short guide for buyers choosing between counts and yarn types.

    Higher number, finer yarn

The English count (Ne) says how many 840-yard hanks weigh one pound. The more hanks, the thinner the yarn. A 60s yarn is much finer than a 10s yarn.

20/2 means two strands of 20s twisted together. The finished yarn is about as thick as a 10s single yarn.

    Carded and combed

Carded yarn is made by carding alone, which keeps cost down and suits everyday fabrics. Combed yarn goes through an extra combing step that removes short fibres, so it is smoother, stronger and finer.

    Ring spun and open-end

Ring spinning twists the fibre on a ring frame and gives a stronger yarn with a softer hand. Open-end (rotor) spinning is faster and gives a bulkier yarn, mostly in coarser counts.

    Compact yarn

Compact spinning is ring spinning with an extra step that gathers the fibres tightly. The yarn has less hairiness, which helps fabric look clean and resist pilling.

    Slub yarn

Slub yarn is made with deliberate thick and thin places along its length. It gives fabric a textured, uneven look.

    PC blends

PC is a polyester-cotton blend. Polyester adds strength and easy care, and cotton adds comfort.

Single yarnOne strand, spun and twisted once. Written as 20/1 or 20s.
Doubled yarnTwo strands twisted together for strength. Written as 20/2.
Slub yarnThick and thin places on purpose, for textured fabric.
PC blendPolyester and cotton fibres spun into one yarn.
